Is Kylie cancelled?
Yes, on this here blog, we also cover entertainment news, because news is news. And as today is Kylie Jenner's birthday, I couldn't think of a better opportunity than now to shine some light on the current backlash she's been receiving.
Let's start simple. What is cancel culture?
Cancel culture in its basic essence is like the old age boycott that people used to do to overthrow their opposition. But in cancelling an individual or an entity, one ensures that person or entity receives so much online hate that they lose opportunities and brand deals or anything that can help them and also have them be exiled. I know right, sounds extreme. It can sometimes be justified when someone of high power or profile can say or do something wrong or unjust without having to face any consequences. But sometimes it can be absurd for things someone has done years back or something unintentional. Like everything, because people know they have the power the ensure they misuse it or be unjust with it. Cancel Culture started and mostly resides in the twittersphere.
Who and Why is Kylie getting cancelled?
Kylie Jenner is part of the famous Kardashian-Jenner family. She is also a model and has a very famous makeup company. The pseudo billionaire is also married to famous rap artist Travis Scott. On the 7th of August 2020 she was part of a music video named WAP (google meaning at your own risk). The song was by Megan Thee Stallion and the controversial Cardi B. Now, if I'm being honest I don't know why she is getting cancelled but the reason stated has been because of " copying " aspects of the African culture even though she isn't of African decent. She also received backlash some time back for having Cornrow braids. There is petition people have been signing to cut her out of the video.
Should she get Cancelled and what are my thoughts on this matter?
Like I stated before, people abuse their power to bring down people on whose level they will never reach. The envy in peoples minds trumps their power of thinking right and straight. Also we live in a very closed minded times, if people don't do what you like they have to be cancelled, if they did something bad 10 years they get cancelled and so on. Most times the people who try to cancel others have a worse history then the people they try to end. Also, the essence of culture is to see it spread and its effect on the world. If Kylie was representing something of my culture I would be very proud. And she would not be there if the artists themselves didn't want her and regardless of what you think of the video it isn't yours to change. People need to learn when to use this power they have.
Like Uncle Ben said to Peter Parker, " With great power comes great responsibility." And if someone is not doing something you like and it is not coming in your way, LET IT GO. But if someone is doing something wrong NOW and not in the past then do what you think is right.
Being cancelled for something small is equivalent to someone being convicted without having committed the crime. They are both overlooked by society, both lose what they've been building on and lose a part of their lives for no reason.
